Fridge for Casey Antarctica - 2014

Casey Station in Antarctica is a closed off environment within a delicate ecosystem; any waste created cannot stay in Antarctica it must be brought back to Australia, hence the station may need to improve how mindful they are about food and food waste.

Food gets delivered to Antarctica once a year, hence does foods need to be stored in their optimum storage conditions in order to last longest. Unlike most people think, a lot of food does not need to be stored in the fridge and will last longer and taste better when stored else where.

While designing the Casey "Fridge"; an outside of the fridge food wall, I was also conscious that many people may lose touch with their food and nature while in Antarctica. While food is only prepared by the chef, other staff on base may become less mindful when they only see it in its cooked form. While the only plants in Antarctica are those in the hydroponics system and moss and lichen, some staff may deeply miss having plants around them. The wall laden with food aimed to store food in optimum conditions also helps on a mental level; it gives something green and aesthetically appealing to the area around it also while encouraging people to become more aware and mindful of their food.
