The overall shape of the room divider resembles our geography and environment. We are surrounded by sea, by animals, plants, mountains, all fluid shapes which flow. The waves, the kiwi, the koru, the southern alps, the list goes on.
The panels are made up of four pieces of pine wood. They sit at angles with each other, all with their own lengths. This resembles New Zealanders and their different unique values and beliefs, but we all come together to form society.
Maori weaving is what holds us together, our underlying indigenous, the basis of what we started from. Our culture has spread throughout society, every piece of pine.
New Zealand is made up of many different aspects, with a huge range of values and communities. They move in their own unique pattern but are always connected.
They all fit together to make New Zealand what it is.
They are all different sizes but still work together. This is why I chose to call it Kanorau, Maori for diversity.

Folds down in a zig-zag manner to condense down
I made traditional Maori weaving patterns using four strands to create a circular rope pattern. This rope I then weaved through the panels to hold it the room divider all together.
The room divider can condense down to fold into one another. This makes it compact and easy to store when not in use.
