Appleyard Apiaries - Brand Identity

Appleyard Apiaries - Brand Identity and Packagaing Design, June 2013

The brief asked for the creation of a fresh brand identity for a for a family run organic honey business. The company was very much focussed on being traditional and hand crafted; however they also wanted to appear modern and luxurious. This presented a polarity in the brand model that needed to be solved.

In order to address this, I used a fusion of traditional water colour painting and digital  techniques in order to create a sense of the 'old' and the 'new' in the logo design.  I also used several historical references such as the use of the classic Bodoni typeset and long flowing lines reminiscent of art nouveau. These were then coupled with more modern illustrative shape and form, thus further explaining the tradition and modernity of the company.

These ideas were then used to create a unique and abstract label design that reusued many of the elements of the main logo. The idea was to create an abstract sense of the vibrancy of life in the countryside during the summer.

I designed a metalised jar reminiscent of the tin packaging of the past. However I applied this with a very modern chrome finish - once again this helped resolve the presenation of the old and new of the brand.
