Magazine Layout | Brighton City College

The first of my flyer layouts using direct characteristics of that of the Swiss Style - with the use of bold forms, text and colour, and established on the grid. The red was chosen primary colour as it's most significant to the topic of Rugby - with the red rose being Engand's badge - and the 'H' shape or the lines was based on Rugby goal posts.
The design was influenced by the Swiss Style, but has taken on my own interpreation. The colours were mostly chosen based on the photography and images - the dark charcoal colour (not pure black) made for a sophisticated backdrop to some of my cut-out museum pieces. I've kept the colourscheme simple, but left it open for development on my next idea...
In the world of work, the finish of a magazine or flyer is determined mostly by the company's budget, so it's easy to become acustomed to designing on standard paper or CMYK inks. After researching various paper types and finishes, I found myself excited to impliment some slightly more costly techniques to the flyer (as a college project!)
In the previous version of the flyer I struggled to pick another colour that worked alongise the charcoal - leather-brown just looked a bit flat. Adding a touch of Pantone gold ink gave it another dimension and as many of the museum's statues and trophies were gold so it seemed fitting. I also discovered many exciting cut-outs on front covers which inspired me to create the grid on the front cover.

Influenced by the Swiss Style or International Style of graphic design, I've created new layouts for the World Rugby Museum in Twickenham.
