Beijing-based Meng Jinghui is one of China's most influential directors in the country's avant-garde theater scene. His plays employ many techniques rarely used onstage to impress audiences both visually and emotionally.

 

"Soft " (柔软 Rou Ruan ) is the last play in Meng's "Pessimism" trilogy. The other two plays in the trilogy are "Rhinoceros in Love" and "Amber."

 

The 90-minute play was written by Meng's wife, Liao Yimei, starring actors Hao Lei, Robert Fan Zhiwei and Jim Chim Sui-Man, each of whom plays two roles. The play is about a love story between a female doctor and a young man.
