By the end of 2008 we received a request from Znak publisher to design a series of covers for Eduardo Mendoza's novels: "The Mystery of the Enchanted Crypt", "The Olive Labyrinth" and "The Adventure of the Powder Room". The main character of these three crime stories is a peculiar yet surprisingly clever detective who repeatedly flees from a mental hospital. An underhand intrigue leads him to the dark alleys of 1970s Barcelona. Full of crafting humor and witty allusions, Mendoza's books gained immense popularity among Polish readers.

The style of 1960 and 1970 provided inspiration for my design, therefore I used some patterns from that period as a theme. I also used a comic books stroke and lively colors for the illustrations to emphasize the comedy style of the writer. Moreover, this characteristic, cropped frame of the pictures refers to the mystery story and underlines the criminal atmosphere in the novels. To complete the project, I chose the Tomas Brousil's Fishmonger typeface, designed endpapers and simple page layout.

Shortly thereafter, we got a commission to design Mendoza's humorous book, "The Amazing Journey of Pomponius Flatus" and his debut crime story, "The Truth about the Savolta Case". In order to keep the consistency among the books in the set, I decided to stick to the stylistics we used previously, make new drawings and develop new patterns. The end result of my work is a uniform set of five novels which stands out on the Polish book market. Reportedly, the writer himself expressed appreciation for my illustrations.
