UN member statesand various international organizations have set for themselves loftyMillennium Development Goals to aid international development. Improving accessto clean drinking water is one of them.
Steady improvements over the pasttwo decades have been recorded in developing regions, with the exception ofSub-Saharan Africa, which still lags far behind. In 1990, the access to watersources, as a percentage of the total population, was a poor 49%, whichincreased to only 53% by the year 2000, and 60% by 2008. Judging by these slowtrends, Sub-Saharan Africa is unlikely to achieve the MDG’S target.
