"When you were born loser, you are always looking to a way to die as a loser" This drug rehabilitation center is inside one of the Hazara community in Herat. Many of them were forcibly returned to Iran, where they had work and a home. Currently treated patients were twenty five, all heroin addicts. The center does not have any form of public funding but is supported by relatives of patients who pay 5,000 Afghans ($ 100) as a admission fee. The patients are interned in cells during the most critical phase, before moving to the room with the others. The director told me that often the treatment is useless because once out of the center, patients begin to take drugs to escape from daily life consisting of unemployment and submission. The drug trade in Afghanistan is still booming, Afghanistan is still the world's main supplier of opium (87%). and plantations of opium poppy that Americans had sworn to eradicate have never been so prosperous and the Taliban who had virtually eliminated during their "caliphate" now use drugs to finance and arm themselves.
