Asian Cultural Council Calligraphy

Typography
In late October early November I was commissioned by Copper Leaf on behalf of the Asian Culture Council to produce 2 documents to honor Jose Cruz Natori and Cai Guo-Qiang on the 50th Anniversary of the ACC.
Each was being honored for their contributions to art and design…you can read the dedications.
The design was to do a more creative approach than the usual “Whereas” type certificates. After approval of sketch Calligraphy was written using ground sumi ink on Arches paper. The gold is 23k gold leaf applied to a polymer base and burnished. I used black acrylic paint to letter the names in brush.  Then more 23k gold for final decorative touches. A joyful project and as always, I am grateful to those who can sense the difference between this hand craftsmanship and the fake printed thing.
Several layout and design ideas were consider…
First thoughts jotted down on paper with pencil…
Looking for the best way to present the words. These type of documents can get very institutional looking.
Gilding (cutting 23k gold leaf with a gilders knofe.
I had to paint paper for the background mat
Detail showing smaller writing. The sheet is 6 inches wide (15.24cm)
