WORLD ANIMAL DAY DISPLAY

Whale Of A Time
October 4th is World Animal Day, a day taken quite seriously at Odel. The concept of conserving the humongous species - whales - pops up in VM displays. Odel promotes the cause of Responsible Whale Watching.

A topic of genuine concern manifests as a theme at the Odel Alexandra Place Atrium. While whale watching may sound like a mere joy activity it is critical to the life of these magnificent mammals. They too need their own space while having to be respected and adhered to by onlookers may drive the whales away to toxic territories or become victims of vessel accidents. There are programs educating people about responsible whale watching. Of course, at the Odel, the displays celebrate the life of these adorable creatures.

For World Animal Day, Odel created an atmosphere talking about whales and their underwater friends. The atrium ceiling plays the base for animations of these creatures to hang down. The atrium ceiling was chosen so that the festivity of the installations is felt throughout the store. A huge 3D whale made from Styrofoam and spray painted on top is quite the center of attention. 2D cut-outs of other underwater animals like dolphins, fishes, turtles, etc. accompany the whole.

The campaign is a full-fledged one and is expressed through the merchandise as well. Special merchandise designed exclusively for the World Animal Day theme promotes the concept. Souvenirs, soft toys, apparel, mugs, photo frames and the like demonstrate the concern for whales. The display stands carry catchy lines like 'As big as 33 elephants, but still small enough to be killed by ship strikes' and 'A heart as big as the Volkswagen Beetle but still small enough to be scared by whale watching boats'. Although a simple gesture, these statements do their part in spreading awareness which is the primary concern of the theme.

Odel, as a brand, has always carried themes portraying issues of concern as and when required. Pretty things may or may not attract the customer; an emotion of concern will definitely draw him/her closer. The profits from this collection go towards the First Responsible Whale-Watching Accreditation Programme in Sri Lanka.
