Abused as a child, Reznik becomes the quintessential, evil creator and puppet master. Escaping his miserable life at his evil father's orphanage as a young teenager - he took a menial job as caretaker for the Ossuary (bone yard) and retreats from the world which has so mistreated him. In an almost Brothers Grim- meets Tim Burton way, his revenge on society is to make puppets out of the bones of the dead local children and sell them in the town.
To escapes his loneliness he makes an almost life size personal puppet (cohort) to keep him company - Pavel. Unwittingly including some bones from his good hearted mother, the puppet is infused with her magical spirit and nightingale voice. He's awoken by beautiful singing in the Ossuary one night. Upon inspection he discovers that his creation Pavel has come to life and the story of Pavel's quest to shine a light on the good inside of Reznik begins.

The main character in the story pays homage to 'Pinocchio' in that he's a puppet that strives to come to life. He's infused with the spirit and voice of his creator's dead mother. Unfinished and laying on the workbench, Pavel witnesses Reznik's evil behaviour (see Reznik's dossier). Unable to speak he has little or no control over his limbs and struggles to communicate with Reznik to help him see the good in people. Pavel's mission is to cut the strings of all the child puppets - saving them from Reznik's evil ways. He also will strive to bring himself and them to life, sharing the simple love of being alive with Reznik and showing him that letting go of the strings and losing control will bring him happiness.
