FOURTH YEAR STUDIO- GUGGENHEIM HELSINKI

The 21st century has seen Helsinki embrace the greatest period of change in its two hundred year history as the capital of Finland. Guggenheim Helsinki marks the pinnacle of this transformation, a celebratory beacon of change shining out upon the waters of Eteläsatama.

The resulting form embodies the concept of illiumination and the manipulation of light and sight, twisting into a depicted unravelling of over two hundred years of history and culture, while demonstrating the tensions between the showcase of art and the form that houses it.
Design Studio 8 saw us unite to form teams to embark upon a design competition entry for Guggenheim Helsinki, as well as an accompanying documentation set of the building. We engaged a period of multiple design iterations before finally settling upon the form seen below. This form was further refined during the process of documentation, which through consultation with architectural tutors, structural and services engineers enabled us to give this mass, usabilty, structure and a detailed, functioning spatial experience that conforms with Australian Building Standars.

The following documentation set was produced by the three members of Team Lux; myself, Sam Chua and Marko Cubrilo.
