Located on a 350 hectare site to the East of Abu Dhabi, Motorworld will provide the premiere automotive retail experience for the region. Conceived as a solution to the chronic parking issues that plague existing retail locations around the city, the site will house all major car brands in a single convenient and easily accessible location. The project incorporates a total of 344 individual car showrooms, which are in turn supported by a range of complementary facilities including a museum, driving school, car rental, registration center, testing location, service, specialty retail and a large test track at the heart of the site which offers customers the opportunity to test drive potential purchases.
The 270,000 m2 of automotive-focused program are complemented by an additional 218,000 m2 of mixed-use elements, including commercial offices, luxury residential, hotel and retail accommodation. To the west, an existing residential masterplan occupies the remainder of the project site.
The design of the Motorworld masterplan establishes a clear division of functional zones and a natural circulation flow stemming from a primary curved spine. High profile automotive outlets are found along this main boulevard, with used car sales arranged in a more disciplined network of buildings around the test track facility. Shaded pedestrian routes link each of the zones and connect to both light rail transit route passing through the site and the mixed-use buildings at the western edge of the masterplan.
Architectural designs for a number of automotive showroom prototypes were also developed parallel to the masterplan. These provide a series of distinctive, building forms conceived as a series of floating and folded planar surfaces. Carefully selected metallic palette of materials provides a neutral aesthetic framework to celebrate the automobiles on display.
