BACKGROUND
• HPV is the most common sexually transmitted disease infecting about 80% of young women within 5 years of becoming sexually active
• 8 out of 10 people (80%) in the UK are infected with the HPV virus at some time during their life
• Young girls don’t understand how HPV is contracted or know there is a link between sex, HPV and cervical cancer
• HPV left undetected can lead to painful procedures, cervical cancer and being unable to have children
PROBLEM
Because girls are becoming sexually active now in their low teens and pap smear tests that detect HPV and cervical cancer are not administered until their 20's- there is a significant amount of time for young girls to contract HPV and have it be left undetected for many years increasing their risk of it turning into cervical cancer.
