Holy Name + St. Mary Catholic Church Bulletin

The Holy Name and St. Mary's Catholic Church, a joint parish serving Winfield and Oxford, Kansas, reached out to me to redesign their church bulletin. The goal was to refresh and modernize the layout while fostering community engagement. This involved streamlining the design by eliminating the inside flap and optimizing the space to convey essential information effectively. Father Clay, the priest, requested that I design it on Canva for its convenience and accessibility, ensuring ease of use for future edits by parish staff. While Canva may not be a professional design program, I leveraged its user-friendly interface to create a streamlined and visually appealing layout that aligns with the parish's modernization goals. This approach allows for efficient weekly updates and modifications, empowering the church staff to maintain and personalize the bulletin content with minimal technical barriers.

The redesign began with a focus on creating a cohesive visual identity that reflects the connection between Holy Name and St. Mary's Church. To start, I designed a new logo for St. Mary's Church that mirrored the existing Holy Name logo, emphasizing unity and collaboration within the parish. As a centerpiece for the cover, I incorporated watercolor illustrations of both churches, adding a personal and artistic touch that resonates with the community. In the Catholic faith To enhance usability and engagement, I strategically reorganized the content. I also integrated elements that coincide with the Catholic liturgical calendar. Each season of the liturgical year, such as Ordinary Time, Lent, Advent, and Easter, is distinguished by specific colors symbolizing different themes and spiritual journeys. To enhance the bulletin, I designed the front cover to align with the color of the current liturgical season.

Within the bulletin’s internal pages, I balanced the available space with necessary information, ensuring clarity and readability. I introduced a subtle architectural motif—a graceful arch header that echoed the design of the churches’ interiors. The header illustrations depict the intricate stained-glass windows unique to Holy Name, further connecting the parishioners to their spiritual home. By featuring these symbolic elements, I aimed to evoke a sense of familiarity, reinforcing the parish’s identity within the publication. To visually represent the dual nature of the parish, I strategically positioned logos on either side of the header—one for Saint Mary in Oxford and the other for Holy Name Church in Winfield. This layout underscored the unity of the parish while acknowledging the distinct ministries and communities associated with each location. Incorporating ministry listings on their respective sides of the bulletin facilitated easy navigation for parishioners, ensuring that important information about programs and events was readily accessible based on location.
