Here's my latest painting titled "Against The Grain".
The Year: 1984
Setting: Santa Ana Freeway approaching downtown Los Angeles.
This painting was heavily inspired by the Movie "To Live and Die in L.A." but I wanted to have my own take on movies like that. I decided to depict the getaway car as a 1977 Ford Thunderbird since it's a large 1970s American coupe, a type of car that is a staple to action films at the time. Within this scene, I wanted to evoke one of those world famous car chase cliches as I often do in my work. Today the cliche I chose was to have the getaway car swerving into oncoming traffic as an effort to lose the cops. I experimented with certain blurring effects in this painting to help emphasize that motion as well as an "over the shoulder" shot of the Police car on the right hand side. And the cherry on top is all the traffic swerving out of the way in an effort to avoid a potential head on collision. Making this painting was challenging, because there wasn't a whole lot of source material of the Los Angles Downtown Skyline in the 1980s, especially from the angle I wanted it from. So, I used google streetview to help pinpoint a location, and then I had to do some research to omit the buildings that wouldn't have been there in 1984. So the research process was lengthy, but all in all, I feel it turned out great. Anyway, all Fast Lane Illustration artwork by Ryan Sardachuk.
