//Metamorphosis of Space
The project has a concentration on the metamorphosis of space, concerning the changes of occupation and purpose of place. From an inceptive conceptual position, the project has been formed through a process of varied site work; the use of photography and film enabled an intimate knowledge of the site. Engaging with circulation and the continuous atmospheric changes throughout the site, the body of work enabled the production of two acrylic based models. Movement and articulation are key factors in the production of these models, with the aid of projection and strategic lighting these models informed a general strategy for the location of programme within the existing, as well as presenting design and detail ideas for the production of an audio archive and listening rooms located in a music shop and library. Listening rooms are located on the first floor, taking advantage of being south facing, they benefit from the access of natural light. Each room is constructed of laminated ply wood and acrylic sheet enabling natural light to pass through the acrylic. As partially located within the building external areas of the listening room are artificially illuminated, this combination of lighting effects results in an ambient, ever evolving illuminated space. With the ability to adapt, each room can be customised for the occupation and genre of music being sampled. The Archival space is located within the basement, consisting of an automated storage and retrieval system as well as regular archival storage, individuals are able to interact and hunt through the various genres contained within the archive, capable of storing 500,000+ 12inch vinyl records, the archive is observed by the archive staff at a mezzanine office level. Each element of the design carries a uniform characteristic through the use and application of materials and design choices.
