I visited the Museum of Photographic Arts in Balboa Park on March 29th 2024. The piece that I chose to recreate is “Apparition” by the photographer Bill Armstrong. “Apparition” is a piece created with the intention of representing a connection towards the spiritual world. There are different ‘ghoulish’ faces that can be seen in the apparitions. This piece was also created to allow the viewer to “fall into …a world beyond our focus”. Roman busts were photographed for the initial piece which was another interesting aspect to me. Roman sculptures have a really rich history but there is also a sense of prudence to them. Our own existence is put into question as our lives do not go on forever and is a retrospect of the Roman Empire and its ephemerality. The fleeting faces are a testament to this aspect of the artwork. I was really drawn to this piece because of the use of color and abstraction which was something that differed from all of the other pieces in the museum. It was fun to try and recreate this work. I used my phone to generate the different colored lighting on my face. I used my Canon Rebel T7 to take the photos, Lightroom for touch ups in contrast, and Photoshop for the Gaussian Blur that helped better enhance the photo.
