The brief from our client was to design a fresh facade for an existing building in Lagos, Nigeria. From the outset our team of Architects worked tirelessly to take an old building and modernise it for 21st century occupants by implementing a simple style of architecture incorporating clean lines.

Because of the sheer amount of glass in the building, one of our primary concerns was sun shading. We duly presented the client with a handful of glazing options which incorporated tried and tested shading devices.
A fan of minimalist design and architecture, the client duly chose the option seen here.

The primary feature of this architectural design is the repeated incorporation of straight, horizontal sun shading devices. Our design incorporates two protruding sections on the top right and top left of the front of the building exterior so as to help form a natural shade inside the building - behind the middle sections of glazing - at those times of day when the sun is at an unwelcome angle to the building.

As in cities worldwide, parking is invariably at a premium in the over populated, bustling streets of Lagos and so a high priority of our Architects was to take full advantage of the space at the rear of the building and, ultimately, within or beneath it too.

The red we favoured for the dramatic effect outside the building also features inside.

Narrow red strips can be seen on the corridor floor and also adding a little extra colour at the top of the otherwise white walls.

Although these are spaces in which serious work will be undertaken, we felt compelled to use our interior design work to encourage friendly banter and conversation in the workplace.

Low, unobtrusive furniture was installed in each office in the form of white cupboards and shelves, upon which can be housed files of paperwork and books.

Anyone prone to claustrophobia will find respite within these walls, for our interior design Architects extended the friendly and open feel of each office by incorporating large panels of glass to separate the rooms as opposed to using imposing and somewhat anti-social solid walls.

Our main aim was to hopefully engender a sense of kinship and team spirit inside these offices. We therefore opted for low partitions to separate, rather than isolate, the computer terminals and, more importantly, their users from the workspace of fellow colleagues.

We’re thrilled with the final results of our work on this project, and feel we achieved everything that was asked of us when we were first commissioned to create a new, modern development.

We hope everyone who sees the ICD building – whether inside or out – will be as delighted as we are with the re-design of a development which, in the intervening years since it was originally built, had sadly lost both its architectural heart and soul.
