Cultural Placemaking: Redefining Queens Park

Thesis: Redefining Queens Park
My thesis grapples with the colonial history found in Toronto. I am questioning the colonial statue of King Edward VI present in Queens Park. My project hopes to restore diversity and community in the multicultural landscape of Toronto. By creating a sense of community I want to reinvent Queens Parks with a multicultural identity rather than a colonial one.
Existing statue on site vs proposed statue placement that encourages people to come and gather.
The site is located in the vicinity of University of Toronto (formerly known as Kings College) and opposite the Ontario Legislative Building. The location of the project creates a loud message of decolonization being in conversation with the Ontario Legislative Building.
The journey to reach the center is a voyage towards self reflection. To truly be a community, we must welcome each other, learn from one another, gather amongst each other and lastly self reflect.
