Color's point of view

Color sets the mood of a scene, evoking different emotions in the viewer and enriching the movie's meaning.
In this video, I endeavored to delve into the profound influence of color on the spectator's interpretation of the emotional resonance intended within a scene.

I undertook a comprehensive examination of films distinguished by a pronounced 'color identity' in their palette, deliberately steering clear of neutral hues.
By juxtaposing two films with divergent content and color schemes, I sought to transplant the color palette of one onto the other, subsequently scrutinising the resultant effect
In the first case, I chose to juxtapose 'Her' and 'Joker', where the opposing warm, reddish tones of the former are evident and almost complementary to the cool, green-blue hues of the latter. Using the 'DaVinci Resolve' software, I meticulously altered the shades and colors within the scene from 'Her', aligning all tones to match those of 'Joker'. I then proceeded to analyse the effect.

The scene from 'Her' appeared highly dislocated, and without prior knowledge of the content—specifically, the nearly romantic initial encounter conversation—it could be mistaken for a thriller or a moment of tension. The mood and emotions conveyed by the scene were completely distorted by the colours.
In the scene from 'American Beauty', which personally left a strong impression on me, I opted not to directly juxtapose it with a scene from another film, but rather focused on the study of color.
In this scene, the hue of the petals falling on us conveys the character's sensuality, lust, and desire as he dreams. To alter these types of emotions, I attempted to shift all shades from red to white, a color often symbolising purity and innocence in many cultures and collective imaginations.
Following the transition, despite the girl's nude body still being central to the scene, one is no longer overwhelmed by lust, rendering the scene less 'violent' and imbuing it with a softer, almost tender quality.
In conclusion, after analyzing various scenes following this process, I observed how significantly color can influence the perception and interpretation of a scene. This confirms that careful selection of colors is essential for evoking certain emotions on a subconscious level.
