BOOK DESIGN PROJECT
I was tasked with designing two variations of book covers and interior layouts for a classic book as a project for ARTS 223: Typography during the 2024 spring semester at Liberty University. I chose "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland," written by Lewis Carroll. The assignment stated that one book design had to be a high-end hardcover while the other needed to be a mass-market paperback.
I wanted my hardcover to feel high-end, luxurious, and slightly magical, so I chose to use leather and gold foil. When searching for typefaces, I looked for serifs that felt elegant and sophisticated. I hand-drew all the illustrations in Adobe Fresco and then brought them into Adobe Illustrator for fine-tuning. For the interior of the book, formatted in Adobe InDesign, I chose to implement Roman numerals for the chapter numbers and a drop cap for the beginning paragraph.
I wanted my paperback designs to speak to a younger audience, so I chose to illustrate whimsical, brightly-colored flowers in Adobe Illustrator and pair a pretty script with a fun typewriter-like serif. I was heavily inspired by the Rifle Paper Co and Puffin book covers. For the interior of the book, I brought the script in as the chapter title and opted for a lead-in rather than a drop cap.
These are photos from my sketchbook to demonstrate my workflow. I created four ideas per book cover and then completed tight sketches of my chosen designs based upon in-class feedback.
