“A word after a word after a word is power.”
In this piece, I was exploring the idea of words physically coming together to create power. I was looking at the words as different voices and was keen to keep all the voices equal. The idea being that words are powerful but even more so when they are joined and supported with words from others. Multiple voices finding common ground increasing the power of the words used. You can choose to stand alone, or group together depending on the situation and desired goal. I also wanted to create some unease in the piece to comment on the complexities that come with having multiple voices involved to create power.
I choose to create a bookish style, using the Source Serif typeface in black on white to reference Atwood’s role as author. Atwood's name, featured here as a signature, balanced out the piece in bright red, referencing the rejected voices of the Handmaid's of her famous dystopian novel ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’. I wanted the signature to be seen as pushing its way through the crowd to make itself heard.

The outputs include the banner (above) and a short video (below) showing the words moving like a moiré pattern.
