Tips for Improving Basic Swimming Technique

Various tips are available to help people who wish to improve their swimming skills or are new to swimming laps in a pool achieve their goals.

One of the basic tips for swimming that amateurs should note is that swimming requires using and controlling the whole body. When swimming, the hands, legs, and head play vital roles in determining how efficiently a swimmer moves through the water. Swimmers should keep their heads low and ensure their entire body is straight. Also, they must keep the lower back muscles and abs taut, as this helps swimmers generate propulsion from both their arms and legs and power through the water more smoothly.

Good breathing is another essential factor when swimming. Swimmers seeking to improve their technique should avoid wasting their breath in the water. The best way to ensure proper breathing is to take deep breaths after every stroke and gradually increase the number of strokes between breaths as they build endurance. Amateurs should endeavor to exhale with their heads in the water by forcefully pushing out all the air from their lungs, then breathing in deeply when they turn their heads for another stroke.

Finally, swimmers should be sure to engage their hips while swimming. This is because kicking and turning from the hips help swimmers generate more torque and aid better movements. To use hip rotation while swimming, amateurs should try to drive their rotation from their hips instead of their arms. When they do this properly, the torque from their rotation will help them have faster and easier strokes.
