The Residency, Lucknow

The Residency, also commonly known as the British Residency or Residency Complex, it is a group of several buildings constructed between 1780 and 1800 AD, which once served as the residence for the British Resident General, a representative of the British in the court of the Nawab (the native governor).

The Residency system has its origins in the system of subsidiary alliances devised by the British after the Battle of Plassey in 1757, to secure Bengal from attack by deploying East India Company troops of the Bengal Army within friendly Native States.

The Residency complex houses graves of around 2000 soldiers that sacrificed their lives during the war of 1857. At present, this famous heritage attraction in Lucknow is serving as a government office.
