Task: Make the cocktail visually appealing.

When photographing and retouching a translucent drink or cocktail it is always—always—about the lighting. The light needs to come from behind to illuminate the beverage. If that’s not possible on set due to the location constraints, it can be created in post-production as it was for this image.

Using a series of selective layer adjustments—set to various blend modes—I relit the cocktail. This created contrast in tone and variation in color to vividly convey the pleasing palette of oranges hidden inside the original image.

What’s the cocktail, you ask? It’s called “Summer Burst”; made with organic vodka, apricot purée, fresh orange juice, and club soda.
