One Number Three Words
Countryside Safety

The aim of the project was to look at personal safety in the countryside. Aimed at casual walkers, not experienced hikers the aim was to make sure that everyone could enjoy the countryside more safely if prepared for emergency situations. I broke my ankle very badly in 2020 which has resulted in having to recently undergo a fourth operation to have my ankle fused. The place I had my accident was in the middle of the countryside with no location signs and no network coverage, so my companion had to leave me to try and find enough network to call 999.

I found out later that what three words is used by emergency services to more accurately locate casualties and does not need a signal to generate these words. Also you can register for emergency sms text which can send a text to emergency services as often a text can get through when a phone call can't. This led to the idea of one number, three words.

There is an app, which can be used to let your friends and family know where you are using registered walks and alerts and can be used to check network coverage. A website to raise awareness of the emergency sms and what we words and useful merchandise. The merchandise is made to be useful, so for example the torch and whistle can be used to signal SOS and everything glows in the dark to make it easier for rescue teams to find you in an emergency.
