FINAL MAJOR UNIVERSITY PROJECT
For this project, I created a concept and narrative for this post-apocalyptic tube station.
Roughly 10 years ago, an unknown contagion was unintentionally released to public consumption, causing a viral outbreak, which has infected a number of inhabitants. At the outbreak, panic spread rapidly resulting in the collapse of city landscapes. As the primary cities and towns show the highest infection rate, as well as the highest destruction rate, the government called a state of emergency and set up precautionary quarantine parameters that act as ‘safe zones’ while a vaccine is under development.
These safe zones are formed around large buildings of importance and areas that can supply provisions and services. Barricades are put in place to keep in the healthy and un-infected civilians and to keep out the infected ‘zombies’.
Each zone has a tube station contained within it that links to other stations and forms a way of travelling through the different safe zones.
At some point during this time of invasion the infected have overwhelmed these structures and have broken down the barricades into some of the main safe zones.
The model that I have created depicts one of the invaded tube stations contained within a quarantine zone, which has become derelict and overrun.
St Paul's tube station was used as initial reference to the shape and elements included within the structure. I created perspective drawings, concept art and a 3D visualisation of the space based off this structure, and this then lead me on to creating the model itself.
The structure was created at a 1:20 scale and every element is created from scratch using a variety of different materials. All floor and wall tiles were hand scribed and then sprayed and painted to give the right texture and finish. The ceiling tiles were individually cut out, bent and warped before being individually attached to a sheet of Plywood to form the ceiling.
Other materials used include MDF, Balsa wood, various metal piping, wire, artex, modroc, acrylic, etc.
