1821 METERS. EXHIBITION AT METAMATIC:TAF, ATHENS, 2014.
1821 is the year when the Greek Revolution against the Ottoman rule began, leading eventualy to the creation of the first Hellenic Republic.1821 metres is the distance -on a straight line- from the Parthenon to the top of Lycabettus hill, according to the “National Mapping Agency” website.This straight line intersects Plaka, Syntagma Square and Kolonaki, schematically traversing the city’s history. It concisely captures the historical and urban development leap, from classical antiquity to the cementation of the 20th century and the lending bubble of the Greek regime change period. Intermediate stops are Athens-19th century township, the emblematic Hellenic Parliament and the luxurious penthouses at the foot of Lycabettus hill viewing the Acropolis. Staring point for this idea was a 1970's postcard (photo by Nikos Stournaras), depicting two men on the Acropolis, in traditional army costumes, having the contemporary city and Lycabetus hill as a backdrop.
The group exhibition 1821 metres attempts to detect lesions left behind by the historical discontinuity, through references to stereotypical symbols and common places of modern Athens. In a reciprocal dialogue with the building’s historicality, it encompasses the “local colour” of the rooms of metamatic:taf, a space practically “pinned” in the heart of touristic Athens, in the Monastiraki area, among souvenir and junk shops that merchandise the memory (or amnesia?) of the city. A memory gilded and selective, set up as a hasty theatrical scenography of the modern Greek national identity, handy to be consumed by the tourist industry.
Considering that the performing arts have the power – presumably more than any other art form – to transform History into narrative and image, directors, stage designers, actors, choreographers and playwrights, are invited to explore the concepts of memory, oblivion, wrong, truth and lie, focusing on the relation of these notions to the city and the “intersection” of 1821 metres. 1821 ΜΕΤΡΑ. ΕΚΘΕΣΗ ΣΤΟ METAMATIC:ΤΑF, ΑΘΗΝΑ, 2014.
1821 μέτρα: Είναι η απόσταση, σε νοητή ευθεία, από τον Παρθενώνα μέχρι την κορυφή του Λυκαβηττού, σύμφωνα με την ιστοσελίδα «Εθνικό Κτηματολόγιο & Χαρτογράφηση A.E.». Η ευθεία αυτή τέμνει την Πλάκα, την Πλατεία Συντάγματος και το Κολωνάκι, διατρέχοντας σχηματικά την ιστορία της πόλης. Αποτυπώνει συνοπτικά το ιστορικό και πολεοδομικό άλμα, από την κλασική αρχαιότητα στην τσιμεντοποίηση του 20ου αιώνα και τη φούσκα δανεισμού της μεταπολίτευσης. Ενδιάμεσοι σταθμοί, η Αθήνα-κωμόπολη του 19ου αιώνα, η εμβληματική Βουλή των Ελλήνων και τα ακριβά ρετιρέ με «θέα την Ακρόπολη» στους πρόποδες του Λυκαβηττού. Έναυσμα στάθηκε μια καρτ-ποστάλ της δεκαετίας του 1970 (φωτογραφία Νίκος Στουρνάρας) που απεικονίζει δύο τσολιάδες επάνω στην Ακρόπολη, με φόντο την σύγχρονη πόλη και τον Λυκαβηττό.
Η ομαδική έκθεση 1821 μέτρα επιχειρεί, μέσα από αναφορές σε στερεοτυπικά σύμβολα και κοινούς τόπους της σύγχρονης Αθήνας, να ανιχνεύσει τα τραύματα που αφήνει πίσω της η ιστορική ασυνέχεια. Σε αμοιβαίο διάλογο με την ιστορικότητα του κτιρίου, αξιοποιεί το «τοπικό χρώμα» που ενυπάρχει στα δωμάτια του metamatic:taf, ενός χώρου που βρίσκεται «καρφωμένος» στην καρδιά της τουριστικής Αθήνας, στο Μοναστηράκι, ανάμεσα σε souvenir shops και παλιατζίδικα που εμπορεύονται την μνήμη (ή την αμνησία;) αυτής της πόλης. Μνήμη φτιασιδωμένη και επιλεκτική, στημένη ως πρόχειρο θεατρικό σκηνικό της εθνικής ταυτότητας του σύγχρονου Έλληνα, έτοιμη ανά πάσα στιγμή να καταναλωθεί ως τουριστικό προϊόν.
Εκτιμώντας ότι οι ερμηνευτικές τέχνες έχουν τη δύναμη –ίσως περισσότερο από κάθε άλλη μορφή τέχνης- να μετασχηματίζουν την Ιστορία σε αφήγηση και εικόνα, σκηνοθέτες, σκηνογράφοι, ηθοποιοί, χορογράφοι και θεατρικοί συγγραφείς, καλούνται να διερευνήσουν τη μνήμη, τη λήθη, το λάθος, την αλήθεια και το ψέμα, επικεντρώνοντας στη σχέση αυτών των εννοιών με την πόλη και με την «τομή» των 1821 μέτρων.
