December 2023 MANN of the Month: John Patrick Lowrie
This was one of the first "big" projects I did at MANN Magazine. There were a lot of artists in the team who wanted to contribute something for this article. Usually we'd just have one person doing formatting and one person doing the illustrations, but since it was a big article to end the year off with a bang, I planned to have multiple artists on board, doing one illustration each.
Making everything cohesive was a challenge, but I planned it in a way that would make it easy for artists to contribute without having to edit things retroactively.
The process began with a general idea of the vibes we wanted to go for. After reading the article and using what I know of the character he's known for, I came up with a general idea of the direction I wanted to take this.

Several artists had some limitations fitting into the color palette: namely our 3D artists and one traditional artist (And my last-minute contribution of a 2008 Toyota Corolla.) I fixed this by using gradient maps in photoshop and effectively using multiply layers for the traditional art before importing them into InDesign.
My favorite part has to be the image that lizziefij created for the final page: I had the idea for it to be a full bleed illustration, as I think it suits her style very well.
