Weekend Travel Vlog - COMD 2320
The goal of my project was to showcase my mundane Saturday adventure in a relaxing yet fun vlog-style video.
My target audience is young adults who enjoy the small joys of monotonous life and who appreciate the journey just as much as the destination. One of my goals in everyday life is to look for the small details and enjoy the adventure of a seemingly boring life.
Artistic Reasoning
Starting My Video
I started by choosing a type of travel vlog I wanted film, and I decided on a video about my Saturday as a whole. The format is a personal journey exploring different locations with commentary. The goal was to create a video that isn't to difficult to edit or film as I'm a beginner.
Shooting
I shot about 40-50 videos in 4k on my iPhone 12 for this two-minute video to make sure I had enough content. After starting to edit, I realized I had a few holes and went back later to re-shoot some of the locations. The other thing I was conscious of was the framing of my shots. I do a lot of photography and shot a few places like I would've just taking still photos.
Layout
To create the layout of the video, I referenced short vlogs on YouTube from around 2016 when I started watching vlogs. I wanted this video to show movement and walking through my life to see all of these different locations. Since I do most things by myself in the city, I wanted it to feel like the viewer is a friend coming along with me.
Editing
I used Adobe Premiere Pro to edit all of my videos and put them together into this vlog. I included both adobe stock music (Warm Lo-Fi Beat) and a voiceover in my video because it felt more "vlog-like" which was the goal. For the whole project I used the default transitions because it looks the best. Choosing music that fit the beat and vibe of the vlog and not over-editing were probably the hardest parts of this for me. I went back in the from the first video to the second draft and redid all of the voiceovers and changed the music. To record my voiceover, I used my nicer microphone I previously used for streaming to get a better result. Then, I used the audio editor to make my S's less intense and make my voice crisper and more bold.
Overall Design
I chose to edit all of the video clips to similar colors to make it more cohesive. I do think I tried to hard to have similar looking shots and it made the video more boring than I had originally intended. Since I'm still learning how how to get that balance between shot types, I will try to include more variety in shots for the next project. After my first draft of the video, I had a few critiques saying I move the camera too much and ended up deleting about a quarter of the footage I had originally included. Overall, I am happy with how this project turned out and proud of the progress from the first draft to final product.
