He Korowai o Te Pae Tawhiti

He Korowai o Te Pae Tawhiti

He Korowai o Te Pae Tawhiti is an interactive mahi toi (Māori artwork), where visitors can write their aspirations for Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and tie them to the wall, weaving together our collective hopes and goals for the future of Te Tiriti o Waitangi into a korowai or cloak of positive hopes and aspirations for the future of Aotearoa (New Zealand).

Te Tiriti o Waitangi is the foundation document between Māori and the British colonizers signed in 1840, which is currently the topic of much debate after the most recent government attempts at trying to undermine the principles of the agreement.

The concept behind the installation is to create unity between Tangata Whenua (the indigenous people of the land) and Tangata Tiriti (The treaty partners), and to instill hope for our future as a country in harmony where different cultures can be honored and respected equally.
