About the Horned Grebe

Through my research, I found the Horned Grebe is a unique bird. They live on water but can fly and walk on land, preferring to live in ponds and small bodies of water that are easily accessible to bigger bodies of water. They live mostly in Canada but are found all over. There are 2 distinct sets of plumage they have, breeding and non-breeding. When they are not breeding, they have white and dark brown feathers. When breeding, they get orange-reddish feathers on their stomach and neck and golden feathers surrounding their eyes, that is where they get the name “horned grebe”. They have been on the special concerns list since 2009 mostly due to manmade issues destroying, their habitats.
