Map on forest fire and land use in Brazilian Amazon

Mixed media illustration of a map made for a research paper
An analysis of satellite detection of fires demonstrated that fire regimes in the Brazilian Amazon are shaped by climate, land use and environmental policies. In old deforestation frontiers, close to urban centres and characterised by intensified agriculture, fires are becoming less frequent and alternative land use management techniques are adopted, especially in areas with perennial crops.
Meanwhile, with new deforestation frontiers opening in the remote areas of the Brazilian Amazon, there is increasing use of fire for land management and associated wildfires. Protected areas and indigenous lands are essential to protect the remaining forest from fires, but they are under increasing pressure from fires spreading from the outside.
