If a political-critical function is ascribed to art, the question arises as to its usefulness - in the sense of concrete applicability. Are works of art the right media for realising ecological or social goals, for example? Can artistic interventions and artefacts contribute to solving tangible problems? Using current examples, Larissa Kikol’s essay argues in favour of breaking out of the symbolic realm and a practical "exploitation" of art - and thus takes Beuys’ idea of a social sculpture a step further.
