Falena is a fictional non-profit conservation group pretending to be founded in Italy. My groupmates and I came up with this topic for our semester long project based on our concept to inform and educate viewers about moths. They aren't the most favored creature, and they're seen as the ugly cousin to butterflies. Despite this, they're as equally harmless and we wanted to spread awareness along with their unique features. We decided to inform the audience through a 2 part silent film contradicting what many think about moths, and a website to the fictional organization. While being an informative organization, we wanted to incorporate a vintage theme to the project hence the silent film and countryside art. The project started with research specifically on Cotton Bollworm Moths. I found fun facts regarding moths to use for the website, and designed the UI. Following the vintage countryside theme, I incorporated earthy color tones and hand-drew a vintage telephone along with a paper and quill for the website’s landing page. I edited the silent films and took inspiration from 1920s - 1940s films for creating dialogue cards, grain effects, scratchy audio and music. The design of the dialogue cards were made through Photoshop with a photo of a burnt piece of paper taken from creative commons. The noise and the grain were applied to the videos through Premiere and After Effects. I played the moth puppeteer in the second silent film and provided props to try and include as much countryside theme as possible.
