Project Background:
For this project I was assigned to create a Japanese Notan design. The purpose of this project is to perceive positive and negative spaces, and understanding  figure and ground relationships. As well as perceiving asymmetrical balance which will contribute to further design processes.
Brainstorm page
Before getting started on sketching ideas for my Japanese Notan, I started out with a brainstorm page. In the brainstorm page I wrote down twenty ideas, with these ideas I put down things that interested me, sparked my interest, etc. After that I decided to highlight four ideas of mine that I would sketch!
 Four Ideas:
- Abstract geo. Shape formation.
- Tokyo City Landscape
- Trees and nature view
- A woman dreaming.
Sketches
I decided to create two sketches for each concept idea I chose. Through this process I explored balance and symmetry. Materials I used when creating my sketches are a variety of inked material like microns, sharpies, and pen ink. Through this I decided to land with my first concept second sketch, Abstract geometric shapes as I thought it had a classic Japanese Notan design.

Final Japanese Notan:
Lastly, having my brainstorming and sketches process done, I created my Japanese Notan. The Materials I used is black construction paper (5x5), white bristol paper, exacto knife, and glue. With a ruler and a graphite pencil I first went in and drew out my shapes design and went later individualy cutting and gluing my Notan together. Overall through this process it helped me practice and understand the importance of balance and symmetry through the design process.
