PROJECT 2

Conceptual Book Cover
Hi! We were offered the list of American classics and I should have read the book first
This is a dystorian fantasy novel. It was published in 1949 and was greately influenced by the Second World War and totalitarism, by the Hitler and Stalin’s dectatures.
Being born in Sovjet Union I remember that brute fear and total hopelessness among people, who used to remember instinctively, “Big Brother is watching you”.
I detected this mood in Orwell’s novel.
I have heard a lot of stories about postwar time from my grandparents, who lived in a period of Stalin dectature.
My grandpas and grandmas fought against German nazism and defended my country, but when the war was over, our country was in ruins and exhausted people had to recover it.
Stalin didn’t have any mercy to the people, who fought. Some of them, returning back home were clamed “ Anemies of soviet people”.
So this reading was a bit emotional challenge for me, recalling back these memories. But it also was an advantage bacause
I could deeply sense the mood of the book.

THE TASK WAS TO CREATE
THREE CONCEPTUAL COVERS:
Typography, Handmade and Designer's choice.

All covers should
use a standard 6 in. x 9 in. cover size.
All three covers must be for the same book.
All covers must contain the full title and the author’s full name;
but no other text, such as quotes or callouts, should be added.

TYPOGRAPHY
This part was creative and funny. I've tried to make something very simple, playing around the type, its size, thickness and register. My thoughts were twisting around the post-war posters. It was a marvelous experience. I've realized that professional and effective usage of the type is essential
for this work.
A designer should litteraly fall in love with type.

HANDMADE
This cover had to be constructed from physical materials. These physical materials could be created, assembled, collaged, or photographed—the final piece had to be handmade.
So I've completed a pencil sketch, made a photo and digitized it in Illustrator. The most difficult was to match a handmade sketch to type and graphics.
I was thinking  of the optimistic smile  that all Oceanea citizens were obliged to demonstrate
DESIGNER'S CHOICE
This cover could be developed in any style or format. I've combined several images in a digital collage. The idea for the type came from an envelope and a code stencil on it. It wasn't easy to find a right proportion and balance between the image and the type.
