Artist Statement

The materials I use and the making methods have all come from my desire to be sustainable, to think about how and why something is made not merely the aesthetics of a piece. I use brick clay  as it is locally mined and super abundant and I also happen to love the colour when it is fired. My bowls are slip cast from re-used moulds and glazed with recycled glazes. Everything is made by hand using basic pottery tools and a spoon.
I am always inspired by the traditional African and Indian potters who use just 3 elements earth, water, and fire to make, so satisfying.
This exhibition is for dad (not to remember him as I won’t forget him) but to show how I feel
about him. His love of the countryside filtered down to us 5 children as did his love and zest for life. He had a very inquisitive mind, always questioning the given answer,  this is now what I try and do in my making.
I am conscious of the effect that I have on this earth and I want my work to be able reflect and evoke questions of why we do what we do? Many of us go through life without this moment and then find ourselves being retrospective and regretful on our deathbeds... too late to do anything.
Our lives are all recycled in some way ; some of dads saying thoughts are now mine, his life is sustained in his children, his work and in nature.
