Amazing Animals- Great Horned Owl

AMAZING ANIMALS

The intent of this project was to create 4 drawings of any animal I'd like based on a reference photo of my choice. The final composed of a realistic encyclopedic drawing, a gesture drawing, a transformation drawing, and a logo.
I chose to use an owl for this project as they indicate wisdom and prosperity.

This project was completed for Grand Canyon University

Original Photo Reference of Great Horned Owl
Encyclopedic Drawing:
This realistic version of a Great Horned Owl was created using graphite only. I changed the position of the owl compared to the original reference photo to capture his facial expression. To compose this, I started with a very light hue using a HB pencil, then added value using a 4B and 6B pencil, blending them with a blending stick. With my 8B pencil, I added in darker and more vivid details such as the feathers and eyes, leaving whites and light values in the face for highlights.
Corporate Logo:
The corporate logo version of the owl that I created consists of lots of gestalt, movement, and shape. I wanted something that was going to be scalable and identifiable. I went the extra step for this project and vectorized my logo in Adobe Illustrator rather than leaving it in ink.
Corporate Logo Sketches:
I created 18 different logo sketches for this project. Each sketch varies in design principles and technique. These were created using sharpie and tracer paper to display the same position/ stance for each owl.
Gesture Drawing:
The goal of this drawing was to create a free-form version to capture the essence of a Great Horned Owl. I used a brush pen to create this composition.
Gesture Drawing Sketches:
I composed 20 different sketches using ink brush pen, charcoal, graphite, and acrylic paint to ideate versions of the owl that would best capture its essence. I chose number 17 for my final as it is the most gestural and resembles a soft, feathery look in the wings.
Owl Transformation Drawing:
The intent of this drawing was to "transform" the animal into something that it represents. Owls represent wisdom, so I made my transformation an owl with glasses and a book to make him look studious.
Owl Transformation Sketches:
I composed 9 different sketches that worked to possibly resemble the owl. I finalized with number one because it symbolized the owl's meaning best.
