The Aaron Seder Supplement

YEAR: 2021 | 2022

Conceptualized and illustrated the covers 2021 and 2022

To give some context: The Aaron Seder Supplement is an annual publication for the Jewish holiday of Passover. It is in the nature of a Haggadah, the book traditionally used, to guide Passover ritual observance. Each year, the author chooses a different theme for collective reflection and celebration and includes essential elements of the Haggadah.

2021

BRIEF: The 2021 issue raises the topic of technology in our digital age, prompted by the Covid pandemic and the rise of remote work, Zoom, and social isolation.
The imagery of a TV instead of a head is not unknown. My interpretation of the brief is a paradox of feeling closeness and distance simultaneously.

We are close, but we are not.
We take part in each other’s life but are still parted.
A new way to live a human life,
a new way to celebrate Passover together, and maybe even
a new way to old traditions.
2022

Excerpt from the 2022 issue: Although Passover is a springtime festival, the cover theme evokes leaves driven by the wind, referenced in the Haggadah. The theme draws upon Milton Steinberg’s title, As a Driven Leaf (1939), which plays on a verse in Job (13:25) “Will you harass a driven leaf?”
This excerpt functioned as a brief for the cover illustration 2022. Leaves falling down and surrounding the title.
