From the client:
"I love the way old businesses in the 50's / 60's had a recognizable logo like Pep Boys or the Amsterdam bulldog ... Something like Figaro the cat (from Disney's Pinocchio)"

To give the feel of the era the client is fond of, I used a technique to mimic the appearance of deliberate overprinting often seen on old matchbooks and coasters from the 1960s.
It just so happens I love to draw wood grain, so I took every opportunity I could to add it as a texture. Most of it went unused in the end, which is fine. Sometimes you have to kill your darlings.
