ALBERT PEREZ MAYOLAS's profile

TALL EMBLEM STRUCTURE IN DUBAI

I worked with Lagula Arquitectes ( www.lagula.to ) from October 2008 to June 2011. I assisted as an apprentice architect in the design of projects for national and international competitions and Final Plan Sets.

Every year, the Thyssen company organizes an architecture award. The XI ThyssenKrupp Elevator Architecture Award had the aim of building a tall emblem structure in Za'abeel Park in Dubai. The design had to be emblematic and avant-garde, respecting the social and cultural reality of Dubai.

I assisted in making a 3D model to begin the project. I also produced some 3D views for the presentation.

We first analyzed Dubai in a social, economic and cultural way. We quickly realized the importance oil has in its society. We drew a map imagining all the different oil tankers leaving from Saudi Arabia every day and we gathered much information about oil tankers and their measurements. We discovered very interesting pictures about old oil tankers sunk on Namibia's beaches. There were many people dismantling them to get some money selling their metal pieces.

We took this idea and split an oil tanker, into different parts and then reorganized those parts in a different way to try to get a new shape with a different function.
To achieve that we took a poem that uses the same letters in each line. We gave a letter to each part of the oil tanker and we obtained different combinations of these parts according to the poem. After that we chose the best option regarding to the functional program and our personal preferences.
We fit the functional program inside the result in combination, designing different stairs and lifts to give access to the different levels.

The final design was an interesting and avant-gard structure with a strong and emblematic character for the city.
