Book Cover Art | Apple Seeds in the Snow

BOOK COVER ART

Client required cover art as well as eBook cover for her young adult fantasy novel "Apple Seeds In The Snow". The cover art needed to portray in primary focus the enchanted apples featured in the story, almost glowing against the soft white wintry background.  Also included are pine branches and cones, chains, and apple blossoms.  The cover art utilized Adobe Illustrator for Vector elements, Photoshop for color application and element compilation, and InDesign for the final layout files.
CONCEPT

The novel is set in winter and features several elements prominently in the story - enchanted apples, red and full of life, and purple, poisonous and darkly ominous - as well as chains, which represent the chains used to retrain the heroine, which also encircle a mountain in the tale.  Completing the composition are apple blossoms, lush green leaves, tree branches, pine needles and pinecones.  All of the elements are woven together in a composition of vivid color, meant to be a distinct contrast to the soft whiteness of the snowy background.

COLOR PALETTE

As the concept is life in winter, the background is the softest undulating shades of gray and speckled white to represent the snow.  The deep red and purple stand in vivid contrast, and the gentle addition of delicate pink petals and bright green leaves add additional color and help to strengthen the palette as a whole.

VECTOR ELEMENTS

Primary elements for the artwork (title text, chains, apples and several of the branches and pine needles) are created as Vectors in Adobe Illustrator, then color is applied, and the elements are layered in Adobe Photoshop.
AUDIOBOOK

The cover artwork needed to be adapted to suit an Audiobook.
This required adjusting the canvas to a square and creating additional elements such as branches and pine needles to add to the composition to adapt to the increased width and create a 'fuller' look for the cover.
PRAISE FROM THE CLIENT

"Not only is Angela’s work absolutely stunning, but she is an absolute pleasure to work with. She really takes the time to get to know what her clients want and checks in regularly to show progress. I feel like working with her is a real collaborative process and if I am unsure of a design element in my head, I have no qualms about asking for her professional advice. Her designs are beautiful and full of story and I cannot tell you the number of adoring comments my book has received purely because of its cover! I look forward to finishing the series with her and highly recommend her services." - Helen Rygh-Pedersen
