PT Unit Counterweight

PT Unit Counterweight
Completed 2022 as Internship Project at Mining R&D Business
A Pan-Tilt (PT) unit was mounted to the roof of an Volvo EW60E wheeled excavator as part of a project to develop an autonomous mining vehicle. Equipped with several cameras, the PT unit was responsible for providing the system with vision. However it was found during testing that there were significant vibrations and other unwanted motion in the unit when traversing uneven terrain.

A counterweight was suggested as one method to reduce the amount of sway in the unit. The design, manufacture, assembly, and testing of the counterweight was assigned to an undergraduate engineer as a wholly self-contained intended to remedy the failings of the PT unit.

Below is a showcase of some of the work undertaken on the project.
A series of images of the counterweight, from CAD parts and assemblies within Solidworks, to the manufactured laser cut steel parts, to the fully assembled design
Calculations necessary to come up with rough idea of scale and cost of project
