Surrealism & Dreams (Book Project)

Student Project for Publication

The brief was to choose an Art Movement and create a book about it that will educate both designers and non-designers.

I have always been deeply fascinated with the concept of dreams not only because of its strange phenomenon but also because of personal experiences. Several artists from the Surrealism movement feasted on the unconscious and so I took this opportunity to expand my knowledge about it and ultimately create a book that will draw a parallel between dreams and reality.

The idea of this project was to explore the relationship between the dimensions of dreams and reality, and how it has greatly influenced how Surrealism came to be. The main concept of my book was to give the audience a sense of dream-like sequences as they read, so they are basically taken from one dream to another as they are flipping through the pages. The book is packaged in a box with a melting clock for the cover (as referenced from Dali's The Persistence of Memory) to convey the message of having a distorted reality and no concept of time while we are in dream state.
An actual, functioning clock was assembled and placed on the cover to depict the distorted pace of time in our dreams.
The contents of the book are divided into chapters: Surrealism Defined, Enter the Dreamscape, The Story, Psyche, Oneiric and Awakening.
This particular spread from the book was mainly inspired from the phenomenon, "False Awakening" (which can be very much related to the premise of the movie Inception) which means having a dream within a dream, within a dream.
“I believe in the future resolution of these two states, dream and reality, which are seemingly so contradictory, into a kind of absolute reality, a surreality, if one may so speak.”
― André Breton, Manifestoes of Surrealism
