Building and designing a traffic app

Project: With a team consisting of 2 designers and 6 developers, we started from scratch to build an app to make the working day of truck drivers more predictable on the road. The team-members was based in different location, so most of the meeting were done remotely.
The app is based on the Norwegian Road Administration's own open data which is available via their website. The app gives the driver, information about what is happening along the roads such as accidents, road work, hight restrictions and where to stop for breaks.

Roles and responsibilities: Mali was Design lead on the project from the start and was responsible for design deliveries during the project. The ask from the customer was open; they wanted an app for truck drivers. The design process started systematically with an insight phase with in-depth interviews with different types of drivers to be able to understand their needs. Based on the insights, we worked together to create 3 different concepts. We went out to test the concepts and talk to several drivers before deciding to further develop one of the concepts.

Furthermore, we designed sketches, researched similar services and worked closely with developers to find a good solution that was also feasible on the technical side in terms of the short deadlines and capacity.

Outcome: The app was launched after 5 months for a closed user group who tested the app and gave feedback and tips. The app was continuously tested and further developed based on the feedback, and new services were launched along the way.

A big part of being lead designer on this project was also to flag the importance of updating the clients design system to be more adaptable to mobile design and apps.
The app is still in a development stage, but has thousands of daily users.
