Localwatch is an initiative by Vouliwatch, the non-partisan watchdog non-profit organisation, and a new addition to their family of civic activism tools. Part of the Active Citizens Fund programme, Localwatch has been conceived as a bottom-up, monitoring and participatory platform similar to Vouliwatch but at a municipality scale. It enables citizens to take action in matters of their local community by embodying open dialogue and direct democracy tactics. At the moment available for the four biggest municipalities of Greece — Athens, Thessaloniki, Patras and Herakleion — Localwatch is build with scalability on mind and it is planned to open to more cities in the near future.

Localwatch boasts 5 ways of interaction: 1. Asking direct questions to the members of the city council 2. Contributing policy proposals for public consultation 3. Organising volunteering events for the community 4. Participating to the city budget and 5. Evaluating the work of the local authorities.

By employing a bold, urban look and familiar user patterns found in social media and web forums, LW works as a simple and accessible environment that enforces the sense of community to the citizens while at the same time serves as an alternative touchpoint between the authorities and the public.
