Brain-40
Limited Edition Box Set
This box set celebrates the 40th aniversary of Brain Records.

The Brain-40 boxset celebrates the 40th anniversary of German music label Brain Records. Formed in Germany 1972, Brain Records was full of interesting and pioneering music, particularly in terms of electronic music. The acts on Brain were amongst the first to apply electronics to modern music and have hence influenced countless musicians today.
The scene was one of a lot of connections, the majority of the acts shared members, were friends and jammed together etc. So the design features a map of the label plus the surrounding scene showing which bands were connected together. The design references that of circuit diagrams not just as a metaphor for all the connections but because these acts were pioneers of the synthesizer and amongst some of the first to apply them to music.

The synthesizer link is then continued into the back design with the typography and also through the name BRAIN-40, something that could easily be the name of a vintage Moog synthesizer.

Colour was dependent on the area of the label they came from. The music of Brain although largely connected in sound could be broken down into four key styles and hence each style was given a colour which was used constantly throughout the box set. The colour of the relevant disc was the only colour accent on the cover of that record sleeve, and was continued into the book pages and also the vinyl itse
