The Shipping Forecast

This year for my FMP the subject was based on The Shipping Forecast. We were able to create any outcome based on this theme. I chose to focus on the effect it had on the audience. Other students focused on re-branding, children illustration and photography.
My outcome was inspired by how the many of the late-night audience used the radio program to help them fall asleep, due to the monotone repetition of words. I wanted to show this in motion and line, as this also linked to the sea and waves.
Therefore I decided I would create a 3D exhibition piece which consisted of a mobile. I got this inspiration from a baby mobile.

I didn't just want to make a mobile as I felt this wouldn't be recognisable to the audience so I created a A3 poster as well. The poster was to show the motion and repetition of the radio show by the lines and also the style of the type.

I chose the use this format of line drawing on both the poster and mobile after experimenting with many different ways to visually show The Shipping Forecast. I feel as if it shows the voice waves as well as the waves of the sea.

I used mixed media to create the mobile and felt that it should be placed by a window to allow organic movement. The movement would add to the piece through reflecting movement from the waves.
Circles were used throughout my final outcome as they have a smooth edge which allows the hand rendered lines to fall off. I used different sized circles as well to add a variety of different visual medias.
My final outcome was showcased in the campus gallery in an exhibition called Shipmate 28. Shipmate 28 was an exhibition us as a class put together to help gain experience for out FMP project in our third year which will be in a public place.
I later photographed the mobile at the seaside. I felt this was appropriate due to the theme of the brief and created a whole new visual peice.
